Full Biography
Dr. Angela Heck Mueller enjoys an active career as an educator, solo flutist, orchestral and chamber musician, and collaborative artist in Columbus, Ohio. She is the Adjunct Instructor of Flute at Muskingum University where she teaches applied flute lessons and studio classes to flute majors. She also directs flute choir and various chamber ensembles. Since 2010, she has served as Music Instructor at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio where she teaches private lessons and has taught courses in music history, music theory, world music, popular music, music for teachers, and music & dance. During this time, she has made several initiatives to improve the music curriculum and has revived the Minor in Music program. In 2012, Dr. Heck Mueller served as Visiting Professor of Flute at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio where she performed with OhioWinds, the faculty woodwind quintet in-residence. In addition to private flute lessons and studio masterclasses, she also taught various chamber music ensembles, flute methods, and orchestral repertoire classes.
A frequent guest soloist, lecturer, and masterclass clinician, Dr. Heck Mueller has performed and presented at festivals throughout the United States and abroad, including Carnegie Hall, the National Flute Association’s annual convention, the Florida Flute Association's Annual Convention, the Flute Society of Washington’s Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair, the Central Ohio Flute Association’s Annual Flute Festival, the Kentucky Flute Festival, the Oklahoma Flute Society’s Flute Fair, the International Piccolo Symposium, the Classical Music Festival in Austria and in Hungary, and the Haydn Festspiele in Austria, as well as universities such as Ohio University, Ohio Dominican University, Ashland University, Northern Kentucky University, Southern Utah University, Dixie State University, Pacific Lutheran University, Indiana University-East, Cameron University, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the University of Oklahoma, and the Haydn Conservatory in Austria.
She has won numerous awards and honors, including an Appalachian Artist Fast Track Grant, the Sigma Alpha Iota Doctoral Grant for her dissertation, “The Mechanical Development of the Piccolo,” has won several MTNA Young Artist State and Regional Competitions, and has been published in Flute Talk Magazine and the Music & Arts Newsletter. She is extremely devoted to serving her profession and community with activity in several organizations, such as the National Flute Association, College Music Society, and Sigma Alpha Iota.
Dr. Heck Mueller also teaches flute at Music & Arts in Reynoldsburg, Ohio and at Michelle Tuesday Music School (MTMS) in Gahanna, Ohio where she also directs multiple flute choirs. Her students range from beginners through adult amateurs and have won state and regional honors. Under her leadership, the MTMS Flute Choirs have performed at the Central Ohio Flute Association’s Annual Flute Festival, for the Columbus MetroParks, the Gahanna Holiday Lights Festival, and at the Creekside Jazz & Blues Festival. As Site Manager of MTMS Gahanna Campus, she oversees the routine operation and ongoing improvement of the campus and directly supervises other music instructors, assistant managers, and staff. Dr. Heck Mueller encourages student retention and growth and maintains the company’s culture by striving to achieve its mission and vision.
Prior to her faculty position at ODU, Dr. Heck Mueller served as a teaching assistant at the University of Oklahoma and a lecturer for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in Norman, Oklahoma. Dr. Heck Mueller also maintained active private studios in Ohio, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Her current and former students have enjoyed successes in masterclasses, competitions, summer programs, and have been accepted into top universities around the country for both undergraduate and graduate programs.
As an orchestral musician, Dr. Heck Mueller serves as third flutist with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and performs regularly with the Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra, Lima Symphony Orchestra, New Albany Symphony Orchestra, Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra, River Cities Symphony Orchestra, Westerville Symphony Orchestra, and Ashland Symphony Orchestra. She is former second flutist of the Classical Music Festival Orchestra in collaboration with the Haydn Festspiele in Eisenstadt, Austria and has also performed with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Enid Symphony Orchestra, and has made guest appearances with the 1964 Tribute.
With a passion for chamber music, Dr. Heck Mueller joined the Music Ministry at Peace Lutheran Church in Gahanna, Ohio with her husband and cellist, Joseph Mueller and pianist, Michael Lester. Together they launched the vision, “A Path to Peace: Renew Mind, Body and Soul.” Dr. Heck Mueller joined the Divertimento Flute Quartet in 2014. The quartet was founded in 2013 in Columbus, Ohio by four flutists who were searching for a fun yet challenging musical atmosphere. Divertimento Flute Quartet performs regularly for weddings, cocktail parties, and many other special events, playing a wide variety of music, from standard flute quartet repertoire to simple background music or edgier modern works.
Dr. Heck Mueller received Bachelor of Music degrees cum laude from Ohio University in Flute Performance and Music Education, a Master of Music degree in Flute Performance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Flute Performance from the University of Oklahoma. Her teachers include Dr. Valerie Watts, Dr. John Bailey, Alison Brown Sincoff, and Catherine Keener Abner.
