MU Department of Music Mission Statement: The mission of the Department of Music at Muskingum University is to develop the student-musician and to provide a quality music program within a healthy environment. Within the scope of this mission, the department provides students with an aesthetic education through ensemble offerings, applied study, and music courses. It is the objective of the department to provide students with knowledge, skills, comprehension, and competencies needed for entrance level demands of graduate schools, or choice of employment.
Applied Flute Lessons & Studio Class (MUSC 133/333): Teach weekly private flute lessons to all undergraduate music majors and non-majors and prepare students for final juries, recitals, competitions, and other performances. Present weekly studio classes in flute to all undergraduate flute majors. The MU course catalog reads as follows: Applied Music offers private instruction to all students at all levels in brass, woodwind, string, percussion, keyboard instruments, and voice.
Materials of Music III (MUSC 211): Teach the third section of music theory to all undergraduate music majors and prepare students for the fourth and final section of music theory. The MU course catalog reads as follows: A continuation of 112. Prerequisite: MUSC 112 or instructor consent.

Music & Ideas (MUSC 121): This course is an introduction to selected pieces of music studied against a background of the lives and times of the composers.
Chamber Ensembles (MUSC 170): Conduct all flute choir and ensemble rehearsals and performances. The MU course catalog reads as follows: Ensembles offer collaborative group instruction in music rehearsal and performance. Repertoire appropriate to the type, size, and level of each ensemble is studied and presented regularly in public concerts and recitals.
Topics In Music (MUSC 301/302/303): Teach special topic classes, such as Pedagogy & Repertoire, Tone & Technique, Piccolo Class, Career Building/Entrepreneurship, Orchestral Excerpts, The MU course catalog reads as follows: Provides the advanced student an opportunity to study selected topics in music. MU YouthFest Clinician: provide masterclasses for all flute participants
MU Faculty Woodwind Quintet: OhioWinds (with Professor Mary Schlacks, clarinet; Professor Brad Walsh, oboe; Professor Angela Cornett, bassoon; and Professor Albert Houde, horn): The faculty wind quintet in-residence has presents outstanding performances and workshops on campus and throughout Ohio. The ensemble performs recitals and concerts for audiences of all ages and it’s primary purpose is to inspire and educate young musicians about the benefits of playing chamber music, as well as help music directors within the state of Ohio make informed decisions about the vast amount of quintet repertoire available through Ohio Music Educators Association’s Class A, B, and C Ensemble lists.

Ohio University Flute Choir and Flute Ensembles (MUS 2541/5541): Conducted all flute choir and ensemble rehearsals and performances, including the Shimmering Silver Flute Quartet.
- Shimmering Silver Flute Quartet is the premiere flute quartet at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Representing some of the finest talents of the flute studio, these student-professionals are directed, managed, and instructed by professor of flute, Alison Brown Sincoff and in 2012 by Dr. Angela Heck Mueller as Visiting Professor of Flute. Shimmering Silver is a multi-faceted organization, engaging in active community service, serving as a hirable agency available to perform for special occasions, and as an educational and competitive ensemble committed to excellence in performance.
Chamber Music Woodwinds (MUS 254B/554B): Conduct other chamber ensembles in preparation for concerts and recitals. The OU course description reads as follows: “Students enrolled in chamber music will receive one hour of coaching per week for their chamber ensemble. They will also rehearse at least one hour a week outside of coaching and will prepare their parts individually. They will perform as an ensemble at least once per quarter.”
Flute Methods (MUS 263H): The OU course description reads as follows: “To explore pedagogical and performance elements/analogies relative to the flute, with focus on the following: assembly of the flute, introduction to the basics of flute-playing, selection and care for the instrument, the flute family, and an introduction to select method books and solo repertoire commonly used by beginning to moderately advanced flutists.”

Student minimum/maximum enrollment pending instructor availability. Possible credit given for off-campus approved instruction. Fee.”
Music Theory & Fundamentals (MUS 260): The ODU course catalog reads as follows: “This course will teach students how to read, listen to, and understand music. This course will begin with an overview of the most basic aspects of music. It will continue with a rigorous exploration of the inner workings of melody, harmony, and scales as they are used in classical, jazz, and popular music. Students will learn how to read musical notes on a staff, write and use correct rhythmic notation, and construct scales and intervals, as well as recognize them by ear. They will also develop music listening, reading, and writing skills through exercises and ear training practice. The content is more appropriate for students with some musical experience. Beginners are welcome but may wish to consult with the instructor prior to enrolling.”
Introduction to Western Art Music (MUS 187): The ODU course catalog reads as follows: “This course is an introduction to the history and appreciation of western art music. Musical works, musicians, and audiences will be studied in the context of culture, technology, and historical developments from the Middle Ages to the present day. Students will be led to a deeper understanding of musical structure and a more precise musical vocabulary. They will learn how to listen thoughtfully so as to better enjoy western art music through a firmer understanding of its general constructive principles and the artistic intentions of those who composed it. This course partially fulfills the Arts and Ideas requirement.”
Music of the World (MUS 181): The course ODU catalog reads as follows: “This course is an introduction to the music of the people of the World by examining the place of music in distilling culture and its importance in the way of life of the people of that culture. This course fosters a lifelong curiosity and a desire to experience and appreciate music in all its forms. The student will study the culture, instruments, musical elements, dominant attitude toward music creation and performance of each culture, while identifying the musical differences as well as the similarities between cultures. This course includes the study of music from Africa, Japan, India, Indonesia, and Native America. This course partially fulfills the Arts and Ideas requirement. This course fulfills the diversity, global, and multicultural requirement.”
Popular Music in America (MUS 184): The ODU course catalog reads as follows: “This course is an introduction to the roots and history of popular music in America from the 1830’s to the present, and will include an examination of such popular styles as Jazz, Swing, Minstrelsy, Tin Pan Alley, Rock, Country, Latin, Rap, and Hip Hop. The student will gain an increased awareness of the heritage of popular music, an appreciation of its diversity, perceive the underlying kinship of its many diverse styles and influences, and become aware of its evolutionary momentum to become the dominant world-wide musical style of the twenty-first century. This course partially fulfills the Arts and Ideas requirement.”
Music for Teachers (MUS 241): The ODU course catalog reads as follows: “A survey of the methods, models, and materials of early childhood classroom music including music reading, singing, playing instruments, creating music, drama, dance and listening concepts. Curricular adaptations for children with special needs will be addressed.”
Music and Dance (MUS 230): The ODU course catalog reads as follows: “This course will examine the close connection between music and dance, not only in the ways in which music for dance has shaped the development of music in many cultures, but how both dance and style are a reflection of the very culture that they represent. Students will be able to accompany themselves while singing and learn how to create music for both the guitar and the voice.”
Voice Class (MUS 128): The ODU course catalog reads as follows: “This course is an introduction to singing, focusing on developing sound vocal techniques. The student will learn anatomy as related to singing, posture, breathing and breath support, resonance, and diction. A variety of songs will be learned including folk songs, rounds, songs from other countries, musical theater, and classical art songs, including songs in Italian. The student will learn the International Phonetic Alphabet as it relates to diction in singing. The student will also learn to read music, and sing in tune with correct rhythm. It is open to all levels of singers and does not require prior music knowledge or singing ability.”
Women in Music (MUS 250): The ODU course catalog reads as follows: “This course will serve as an introductory survey investigating some of the multiple ways in which women have participated in the art form that is referred to as music. This course will focus specifically on the issues of women as composers and women as performers. A great variety of styles will be covered from contemporary popular, rock, folk, classical, and non-Western. At MTMS, we strive to instill a lifelong love of music performance in all our students. We do this by catering to the individual music education needs of each student and teaching with an enthusiasm that demonstrates our own lifelong love of music performance.
Michelle Tuesday Music School offers one-on-one music lessons for adults and children; classes in piano, guitar, violin, drums, preschool music, songwriting, and drama; coaching and direction for bands, choirs and ensembles; and music summer day camps for children entering the 1st-12th grades.
MTMS Flute Choir & Flute Ensembles: As stated on the MTMS website: “Flute choir consists of 6-12 students under the direction of Dr. Angela Heck Mueller. Rehearsals are 50 minutes once per week. Our Flute Choir performs several times a year for MTMS recitals and in other local performances.”
MTMS Holiday Flute Festival: This festival is under the direction of Dr. Angela Heck Mueller and provides young flutists the opportunity to play in a flute ensemble for the annual MTMS Holiday Recitals.
MTMS Summer Flute Festival: A one-day intensive workshop under the direction of Dr. Angela Heck Mueller.

MUNM 1113: The OU course catalog reads as follows: “Open to non-music majors. A course in music appreciation covering all of the important fields of music, with opportunity for students to listen to recordings and to attend concerts.” This course is designed to help university students with no previous musical knowledge gain an awareness of the main stylistic characteristics of each musical period from the Medieval era to the present and the extra musical influences that help to form that era’s aesthetic. Students will be led to a deeper understanding of musical structure and a more precise musical vocabulary. Through guided listening the student will learn how sound and musical elements shape the music we hear. The course objective is to learn how to listen thoughtfully so as to better enjoy music through a firmer understanding of its general constructive principles and the artistic intentions of those who composed it. With this in mind, the first several lectures, which present the tools by which this goal will be accomplished, are of primary importance.
